‘While Armenia still owns an obsolete air defense system, Azerbaijan has modern Israeli systems, such as the Israeli Spyder, for instance. Indeed, Armenia boasts several S-300 systems, but Azerbaijan has the too.’

Said Yigal Levin, Israeli military analyst, ranking member of the military and the cofounder of the Center for studying rebel movements.

He says nowadays Israel produces weapons both for the ground troops, and the navy along with the air force – any kind of systems as such.

“The country puts the main emphasis on “smart” weapons – robotized and ballistic missile defence systems. The most famous one is the “Iron Dome” air defense system. It has been recently developed and already successfully tested in combat. Among the smaller systems, one should highlight the Israeli Trophy ASPRO-A (armored shield protection). Israel is also developing electronic personal equipment for the “Soldier of the Future” concept. This is the so-called soldier “smartphone”, which will concentrate all the data, collected on the battlefield”, Levin noted.

One of the facts that speaks loudly about the efficiency of the “Iron Dome” is that most of the “ground-to-ground” missiles launched at Tel Aviv from the Gaza strip were destroyed by this system in the air, said the analyst.

“Unfortunately, I cannot speak about the military characteristics of this system, as I am not authorized to do so. As far as I know, Azerbaijan and Israel signed a contract on supplying this system back in 2013 and the Azerbaijani Army already deploys these systems.

The “Iron Dome” is capable of strengthening the Azerbaijani positions in cases if the opponent deploys “ground-to-ground” missiles. In other instances, they can use this system low-flying targets, such as drones. As the drones develop and everybody is in a rush to put their hands on some as well as on the “ground-to-ground” missiles, the “Iron Dome” is justified and may serve as a reliable safety system. It is important to understand that it is purely a defense system”, Levin stated.

While talking of the Azerbaijani and Armenian armed forces, it is crucial to keep in mind that Armenia is a CSTO member and Russia is its main military partner, the analyst reminded.

“It is no secret to anyone that Israel is an important military partner for Azerbaijan, especially in the field of air defense. If Azerbaijan continues its close cooperation with NATO and Israel, you will continue improving the physical infrastructure for your armed forces. The potentials of these two blocks, NATO and CSTO, cannot be compared. Turkey and Israel’s military experiences are also unique and greatly outstrips Russia’s experience. And to think of it, they are Azerbaijan’s major partners.

Azerbaijan has more strength and resources than Armenia to maintain a prolonged war. Azerbaijan can afford reserving a part of its manpower for home front needs, whereas Armenia will be forced to call almost everyone to arms”, Levin concluded.
