Japan asks for explanations on the U.S. President Donald Trump’s saying about abolition of military exercises in South Korea, RBC reports.

“We would like to seek an understanding of this between Japan, the U.S. and South Korea,” Japan’s Minister of Defense Itsunori Onodera told reporters.

According to him, the presence of the U.S. servicemen in South Korea and joint military exercises are vital for the security of East Asia. He added that Japan will continue to conduct military exercises with the South Koreans and will adhere to plans to strengthen its defense against a possible strike by ballistic missiles from North Korea.

To remind, the first ever meeting between the leaders of the United States and North Korea, Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un, took place in Singapore on June 12. As a result of the summit, the parties signed a joint declaration, in which they agreed to develop relations between countries and achieve peace on the Korean peninsula. Kim Jong-un once again confirmed his readiness to denuclearize the DPRK and liquidate the test range of Phungery. In turn, Trump promised to stop military exercises, conducted jointly with South Korea.

In mid-May, Pyongyang said it could cancel Kim Jong-un’s meeting with D. Trump because of the military exercises of the United States and South Korea. The DPRK authorities called the exercise a deliberate military provocation, contrary to positive political development on the Korean peninsula.
