Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov has said the situation in the Azov Sea may escalate due to the expansion of Russia's military presence.

"The expansion of the landing capabilities of the Russian Federation in this region indicates the possibility of provocations on their part on the Azov coast," he said during a meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom to Ukraine Judith Gough, reminding about the Russians' attempts to block ships moving to Ukrainian ports in the Azov Sea, the NSDC's press service said.

Turchynov informed Gough about the aggravation of the situation in the east of Ukraine due to the constant aggression and intense shelling by the Russian occupation troops. "At the same time, the Joint Forces are ready to respond adequately to any provocations," he said.

The parties also considered the possibility of conducting a peacekeeping operation in the east of Ukraine. The interlocutors also paid attention to the adoption of the Law of Ukraine "On National Security". Turchynov expressed his hope that next week "the law, which was worked out together with international experts, will be approved by the parliament as a whole".

"It is vital to pass this law on the eve of the NATO summit in Brussels, as it regulates bringing the entire security and defense sector of Ukraine in line with the Alliance's standards, which is essential for further integration of our country into NATO," he stressed. In turn, Gough emphasized the United Kingdom supports the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine and remains a reliable Ukraine's partner and friend.
