US-led troops in Afghanistan have been trained on a new weapon that looks like a standard-issue carbine, Stars and Stripes reports.

But the weapons fires nonlethal rounds that explode on impact and release a cloud of pepper powder, the site quoted military officials as saying on Tuesday.

About 36 soldiers have been trained on using the weapon. The US military in Afghanistan sought a nonlethal weapon that coalition troops could use to lower civilian casualties.

It will help deter rock-throwing at the towers, patrols and entry control points at some of US bases.

Nearly 270 units of the Variable Kinetic System (VKS), manufactured by PepperBall Technologies, were purchased for $650,000 in March.
