The Spanish government is considering allowing troops to continue serving when they reach the current maximum age limit of 45.

However, Defence Minister Margarita Robles told the Congress of Deputies on 13 September there could be "legal difficulties" in changing a 2006 law under which personnel must automatically leave the services when they turn 45, even if they only continue for a limited period.

The 2006 law includes a yet-to-be-instituted clause that troops should receive training to help them re-adapt to civilian life.

About 5,000 personnel are due to turn 45 in the next five years.
