The Iraqi Ministry of Defence yesterday denied reports that its forces had entered Syria and captured 25 outposts there.

The ministry’s information centre said in a statement that they deny what had been reported about special forces from the Iraqi army’s capturing of Syrian army outposts that had been controlled by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, and which extend from the Hajin area to Deir Ez-Zor on the Iraqi-Syrian border.

Local Iraqi media quoted an unnamed security source as saying that the Iraqi army had crossed the Syrian border and seized 25 outposts to protect them from possible Daesh incursions after the withdrawal of the Syrian Democratic Forces from the area.

“We affirm that our security forces are in control of our borders with all neighbouring countries, and are able to deter any infiltration,” the ministry added.
