North Korea fired off two short-range missiles early Friday morning, the sixth such tests in less than a month. Pyongyang also blasted South Korea over its ongoing war games with the United States, saying they would never sit down for talks with Seoul again. South Korea argued the North’s comments do not reflect recent summit agreements and called for renewed dialogue.

South Korea has been hampered in implementing inter-Korean projects by the US and its emphasis on sanctions and pressure against North Korea. Still, current US – South Korea drills are rehearsing Seoul’s OPCON- operational control – also worrying for North Korea.

South Korea also recently unveiled plans to increase military spending by more than 35 percent over the next five years, including the deployment of at least 40 US F-35 joint strike fighters, three more Aegis missile-tracking destroyers and an aircraft carrier.

At least for the time being, talks between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appear unlikely. However, following the joint US – South Korea military drills, many suggest the North’s Kim and US President Donald Trump are likely to meet in the near future.
