Ships of the Russian Baltic Fleet and Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force are holding their first ever joint anti-piracy drills in the Arabian Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday.

The Russian Yaroslav Mudry guard ship, the Yelnya tanker and the Viktor Konetsky tugboat, as well as the Japanese destroyer Harusame are participating in the drills, the ministry said in a statement.

On Tuesday, the ships practiced an exercise of liberating a ship captured by simulated pirates, the part of which was performed by the Yelnya tanker.

The crews of the Yaroslav Mudry and Harusame, after suppressing the firing points of the simulated pirates, attacked the ship and neutralized the capturers in a matter of minutes and freed the tanker's crew, the statement said.

Later in the day, Russian and Japanese sailors will conduct a joint firing of small artillery and heavy machine guns at a sea target, prepared and set up in advance by the crew of the Russian Viktor Konetsky tugboat.

Then, naval aviation helicopters from Russian and Japanese ships will make cross flights, landing on each other's decks.
