The US Navy has successfully tested a "solid state laser" which is "redefining war at sea", according to a senior officer.

Footage released by the American military shows a beam of light from transport dock ship USS Portland hitting a drone.

Another video appears to show the aircraft burning and beginning to spiral.

The US Navy said the test was the "first system-level implementation" of the laser.

Captain Karrey Sanders, Commanding Officer of USS Portland, said in a statement: "By conducting advanced at-sea tests against UAVs and small crafts, we will gain valuable information on the capabilities of the Solid State Laser Weapons System Demonstrator (LWSD) against potential threats.

"The Solid State Laser Weapons System Demonstrator is a unique capability the Portland gets to test and operate for the Navy, while paving the way for future weapons systems.

"With this new advanced capability, we are redefining war at sea for the Navy."

The US Navy said the test was carried out in the Pacific Ocean on 16 May.

It added the technology provides "immediate warfighter benefits" and can provide commanders with "increased decision space and response options".

The US Navy has been developing directed-energy weapons (DEWs), such as lasers, since the 1960s.
