Belarus Defence Minister Viktor Khrenin spoke about the situation along the western Belarusian border and the response of the Armed Forces after a meeting hosted by Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko, Defence.az reports citing Belta.

“As part of the implementation of the head of state's instruction to monitor the situation and troop movements within the territory of the neighboring states, we have observed the movement of NATO forces in the neighboring territories within the framework of the operations Enhanced Forward Presence and Atlantic Resolve. For example, the 2nd tank battalion of the 69th US tank regiment is being transferred to the Pabrada training ground [in Lithuania], which is 15km away from the Belarusian border,” the minister said.

According to him, the same activity was observed in the spring of 2020. “We are concerned that about 500 people, 29 tanks, and 43 Bradley vehicles will be active close to our border,” Viktor Khrenin noted.

Moreover, Belarus has noticed frequent aviation flights along the state border and reconnaissance of the activities in Belarus. “We are concerned about the flights of B-52 bombers close to our state border,” the defence minister remarked.

He stated that in view of this the activities within the tactical exercise at the Grodno tactical direction have been wrapped up and the military units have returned to their permanent bases.

At the same time, the Armed Forces of Belarus continue responding to the activities close to the Belarusian border. “The missile, artillery, air, and air defence forces remain on combat training duty. As part of the 3rd stage of the surprise inspection of the Armed Forces, we brought the tank battalion of the 11th mechanized brigade in combat readiness. It is fully mobilized, placed on alert, and is ready to use any resources and armaments. The battalion will be transferred to the Osipovichsky training ground where it will undergo a live fire exercise and a tactical exercise. Five more military units are also undergoing mobilization,” the defence minister said.
