Two years pass since Tovuz battles

Two years have passed since Tovuz battles as a result of which Major General Polad Hashimov and 11 other servicemen were killed.

Starting from afternoon on July 12, 2020, the Armenian armed forces violated the ceasefire to seize positions in the direction of Tovuz region of the Azerbaijani-Armenian border. In order to escalate tensions, Armenia committed a military provocation using machine guns, grenades, sniper rifles, mortars and other artillery.

The armed forces of Azerbaijan retaliated and launched counteroffensive measures, preventing the Armenian armed forces from moving forward. Armenian armed forces withdrew after suffering losses following retaliation from the Azerbaijani army. Azerbaijani Army killed nearly 100 manpower and destroyed military equipment and major objects of the enemy. 

Major General Polad Hashimov, Colonel Ilgar Mirzayev, Major Namig Ahmadov, Major Anar Novruzov, Senior Lieutenant Rashad Mahmudov, warrant officer Ilgar Zeynalli, warrant officer Yashar Babayev, non-commissioned officer, soldier Elchin Mustafazade, Sergeant Vugar Sadigov, soldier Nazim Ismayilov, chief soldier Elshad Mammadov and soldier Khayyam Dashdamirov heroically martyred on the battles with the enemy.

As a result of a projectile shelled by Armenians fell on one of the houses in Aghdam village, the owner of the house, civilian Aziz Aliyev, 76 years old, died. 

Along with that, as a result of artillery and mortar attacks by Armenians, houses, administrative buildings, civil facilities and schools were severely damaged in several villages on the border with Armenia in the Tovuz district.

In accordance with the order signed on December 9, 2020 by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Major General Hashimov Polad Israil oglu and Colonel Mirzayev Ilgar Anzor oglu were awarded title of 'National Hero of Azerbaijan' for their special services in the restoration of the territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan and their heroism in combat missions.
