National Hero Allahverdi Bagirov

Allahverdi Bagirov was born on April 22, 1946 in the city of Agdam. After finishing school, he engaged with sports. He was the head coach of Aghdam football club "Karabakh", as well as a member of the Popular Front of Azerbaijan.

 


After Black January of 1990, Allahverdi Bagirov organized a volunteer battalion in Agdam. During the war, he was elected chairman of the Popular Front of Agdam. The flag of Independent Azerbaijan for the first time was raised by Allahverdi Baghirov in Aghdam.

In January 1992, all the forces and techniques of the Armenians in Naxchivanli village was destroyed by Azerbaijani military units under the command of Allahverdi Baghirov, then progressed to the Askeran fortress with 150 warriors, created the opposite position with the village of Ketuk. It took just two hours for Allahverdi Baghirov's soldiers to complete the operation and replace Armenian flags with Azerbaijani flags. Allahverdi Baghirov was awarded the title of "General Mohammed Asadov" for this operation.

During the Khojaly genocide, the battalion of Allahverdi Bagirov near Askeran managed to save hundreds city residents. Bagirov made a great contribution to the removal of the bodies of those killed during the Khojaly massacre from the battlefield and the release of Azerbaijani prisoners in exchange for the bodies and captives of Armenian soldiers. Allahverdi Bagirov, through Vitaly Balasanyan, commander of the Armenian battalion in Askeran, saved more than 1003 residents of Khojaly from captivity in three days.

On June 12, 1992, he took part in returning of villages of Aranzamin, Nakhichevanik, Dahraz, Agbulag and Pirjamal. He believed that he would be able to reach Khankendi with his battalion. However, returning after checking the post, Allahverdi's car was blown up on a mine. He and the driver lost their lives.

With the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated February 24, 1993, Allahverdi Teymur oglu Bagirov was awarded with the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan. Allahverdi Bagirov is buried in his native land of Agdam. He had three children: one son and two daughters.

After 27 years, the grave of the National Hero, martyr of the Karabakh war, former head coach of the "Qarabag" team, Allahverdi Bagirov was libeareted as a result of 44-day Patriotic War.  On November 27, daughters of Allahverdi Bagirov, officers Zumrud Bagirova and Aynur Bagirova, visited their father's grave after 27 years.

Note, the territories of Azerbaijan, which was occupied by Armenia nearly 30 years ago, was liberated from the occupation during the 44-day Second Nagorno-Karabakh War. The war started on September 27 when the Armenian Armed Forces launched a large-scale military attack on positions of Azerbaijani army on the front line, using large-caliber weapons, mortars and artillery and lasted until November 10. Until November 10, the Azerbaijan Army liberated some villages and cities of Fuzuli, Jabrayil, Gubadli, Zangilan, Khojavend, Khojaly, Terter, Shusha and Lachin districts. 

On November 10, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia signed an agreement to end six weeks of fierce fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Under the agreement, Russian peacekeepers were deployed along the front line in Nagorno-Karabakh under a five-year mandate and the corridor between the region and Armenia.

Also, according to the agreement, on 20 November, Armenia handed over the Aghdam region which lies to the east of Nagorno-Karabakh, to Azerbaijan. This followed on 25 November by the Kalbajar region to the northwest of Nagorno-Karabakh. 

Finally, on 1 December, Armenia handed over the Lachin District, over which the Lachin pass connecting Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia passes.
