Armenians often attacked and murdered the people living in the villages near the border, said Razim Aliyev, the former second secretary of the district party committee before the occupation of Gubadly district, in his interview with AzVision.az.

Razim Aliyev also added that during that time, several people, including a Soviet officer, got killed in the Yukhari Cibikli village of Gubadly district while talking about the Armenian attack on a unit of the USSR Interior Ministry in the district and the horrific crimes committed in the Yukhari Cibikli village on April 7, 1991.

Aliyev also touched on the bloody crimes committed by the Armenians 30 years ago.

"A state of emergency had been declared in the districts around Karabakh, including Gubadly since January 15, 1991. In this regard, Moscow’s battalion dislocation on Shusha was sent to Gubadli on January 17. A unit of this battalion was located there to protect the residents of Yukhari Cibikli village on the border with Gafan and Gorus. The unit's deputy commander for political affairs was a Ukrainian citizen, Oleg Babak.

Azerbaijanis used to live in Shurnukh, Agbulag, Shamsiz villages. In 1988, they were deported from those villages and Armenian terrorists from abroad were settled there. They were destroying our villages located near the border. Also, they were attacking and killing the local people and taking hostages.

They started the bloody crimes on April 7, 1991, by kidnapping the forest guard's son and his relative. The forest guard's son used to help his father by patrolling the area. That day he was in the forest with his cousin. While walking in the forest, young men named Shahin and Garib were ambushed by Armenians. Armenians killed one of them in that area and took another one as a hostage.

They put his dead body in a place where they could ambush more villagers and take more hostages. As a result, they could ambush the people who were looking for the murdered man including the field commissioner of the village. Following the shooting, the field commissioner, murdered the man’s fiancée and other people got wounded. The district centre was informed about the shooting, police were sent to the scene.I was working as a second secretary of the District Party Committee at that time. The shooting which has continued for more than two hours stopped and the injured was sent to the district center, when we arrived there.”

Razim Aliyev noted that the deputy commander of the unit Oleg Babak  martyred fighting heroically during the attack:

"Oleg Babak participated in the defense of the village together with two sergeants, Loginov and Bochkov. He neutralized 24 Armenian terrorists. When his bullets finished, he asked his sergeants to leave and participated in the shooting with their guns. In the end when he saw that he had no bullets, he stopped firing and told that he was a Soviet officer. Nevertheless, he was taken prisoner. They had already taken Oleg when we reached the village. The newly appointed commandant also came with us. Armenians usually committed murders when the commandants were changed. The new commandant didn’t know the situation.

One of the Armenians who took Babak prisoner knew him. They studied together at military school and served together in Soviet Army.

However, he didn’t show mercy to the deputy commander and shot him in his spine. Armored military car brought his body half an hour later. I put his lifeless body in my car and sent to the district center with two servicemen. We have known each other for a long time. I told him about our lands - Karabakh. He was interested in such conversations. I stayed with people in the village. There could be a second attack. We had to be precautious. The Armenians returned the hostage, whom they took to the forest 7 days later. We exchanged him for another hostage.

Oleg's body has remained in the district center for several days, where the military unit was located. District executive, the first secretary Shahsuvar Yahyayev and the local community sent a telegram to Moscow and Gorbachev about his heroism. We made his tombstone in the region and sent it to Ukraine. On September 17 of that year, he was awarded a hero of the Soviet Union. In December, the USSR dissolved and Oleg Babak became the last hero of the Soviet Union.

Note, Oleg Babak was born on 25 February, 1967 in Poltava province of Ukraine. He was deputy commander of unity for political affairs which was part of the 21st Brigade serving as an operational appointment of the Internal Troops of the Ministry for Internal Affairs of the USSR. In March, 1991 he fulfilled tasks of maintaining public order in Azerbaijan’s Gubadli district. On April 7, 1991 he started to secure civilians in Yukhari Cibikli village of Gubadli after report on the killing of residents by Armenians.
